WhenIwasgettingdivorcedin1975,reportersandcameramenwerecampedoutfordaysinthelobbyandonthesidewalkoutside.Theycamefromalloverthecountry.Foreignreporters,too.Itwasterrible.Myneighborscouldbarelygetinandoutofthebuilding.Onereporter,whohadbeenafriendofmine,gotuptomyapartmentafterpersuadingthedoormanintobelievingthathewasthereonapersonalvisit.Iwouldn'tlethimin:"Hejustwantedtotalk,"hesaid.Iwascertainthathehadacameraandwantedapictureofmelookingdepressed.TVistheworst.TVreporterspresentthemselveshavingtheperfectrighttobeanywhere,toaskanyquestion.Itdoesn'tmatterhowpersonalthemathermaybe.Peopledon'ttrustthepressthewaytheyusedto.Inmostcases,storiesaresensationalizedinordertoattractmorepublicattention.Somepaperspresentthingsthataresimplynottrue.Inmanypapers,ifacorrectionhastobemade,ifitusuallyburiedamongadvertisements.Ireceivedhundredsoflettersfrompeopleaskingme"Howdoyouknowwhat'strueinthepressthesedays?"Ifinditdifficulttorespondsometimes.Itellthemthattherearegoodnewspapersandseriousresponsibleandhonestreporters.Don'tjudgeallofusbythestandardsofthebadones.Unlesstheguysareonthetop,theeditorsandnewsdirectorstakefirmaction,presumingnooneisgoingtobelieveanythingtheyreadinthepapersorseeontelevisionnews.
