Itisgoodtolove,butloveisdifficult.Foronehumanbeingtoloveanotherhumanbeingisperhapsthemostdifficulttaskthathasbeenentrustedtous,theultimatetask,thefinaltestandproof,theworkforwhichallotherworkismerelyperparation.Thatiswhyyoungpeople,whoarebeginnersineverything,arenotyetcapableoflove.Itissomethingtheymustlearn.Withtheirwholebeing,withalltheirforcesgatheredaroundtheirsolitary,anxious,upward-beatingheart,theymustlearntolove.Butlearningtimeisalwaysalong,secludedtimeaheadandfaronintolife,andissolitude,aheightenedanddeepenedkindofalonennessforthepersonwholoves.lovingdoesnotatfirstmeanmerging,surrenderingorunitingwithanotherperson;itisahighinducementfortheindividualtoripen,tobecomesomethinginhimself,tobecomeworldinhimselfforthesakeofanotherperson;itisagreatdemandingclaimonhim,somethingthatchooseshimandcallshimtovastdistances.Onlyinthissense,asthetaskofworkingonthemselves,mayyoungpeopleusethelovethatisgiventothem.Mergingandsurrenderingandeverykindofcommunionisnotforthem(whomust,still,foralong,longtime,saveandgatherthemselves)Itistheultimate.Itisperhapsthatforwhichhumanlivesasyetbarelylargeenough.
