NearlyalltheBritishpeopleinfull-timejobshaveatleastfourweeks’holidayayear.Thenormalworkingweekis35to40hours,MondaytoFriday.Peoplewhohavetoworkinshiftswithunsocialhoursarepaidextrafortheinconvenience.MoreovertimeisworkedatextrapaythaninmostotherWesternEuropeancountries,butthereisrelativelylittle“moonlighting”—thatis,independentworkforpayinleisurehours.Thereareonlyeightofficialpublicholidaysayear,onlyoneoftheminthesixmonthsbeforeChristmas.Noneofthemcelebratesanythingtodowithstateornation,thoughthefirstMondayinMaywasmadea“bankholiday”byarecentLaborgovernmentastheBritishholidayinhonorofworkingpeople.Themostobvious—andtraditional—Britishholidaydestinationisthecoast.Noplaceinthecountryismorethanthreehours’journeyfromsomepartofit.Thecoastisfullofvariety,withgoodcliffsandrocksbetweenthebeaches,buttheuncertainweatherandcoldseaareseriousdisadvantages.Also,twoweeksinahotelroomwithbalconyandprivatebathcannowcostlessinSpainorGreece,withflightsincluded,thanthesameinaBritishhotel.Mostofthehotelsinthenumerousseasideresorttownswerebuiltintherailwayage,between50and100yearsago,andseemnottobeusedasmuchbypeoplegoingtoconferencesasbythoseonholiday.Goingtoaconferencecanbeasortofholiday,eveninworkingtimeandwithexpensespaid.
