Oneoftheselettersarousedresentmentsthatburnedforalifetime.Intheautumnof1842,heridiculedavainIrishpoliticianbythenameofJamesShields.Shields,sensitiveandproud,boiledwithindignation.HechallengedLincolntofightaduel.Lincolndidn’twanttofight,buthecouldn’tgetoutofitandsavehishonor.Ontheappointedday,heandShieldspreparedtofighttothedeath,butatthelastminute,theirsecondsinterruptedandstoppedtheduel.ThisaccidenttaughtLincolnaninvaluablelessonintheartofdealingwithpeople.Neveragaindidhewriteaninsultingletter.
Neveragaindidheridiculeanyone.Andfromthattimeon,healmostnevercriticizedanybodyforanything.Anyfoolcancriticize,condemn,andcomplain—andmostfoolsdo.Butittakescharacterandself-controltobeunderstandingandforgiving.Agreatmanshowshisgreatnessbythewayhetreatslittleman.
