Manymatters,however,arelesseasilybroughttothetestofexperience.If,likemostofmankind,youhaveconvictionsonmanysuchmatters,therearewaysinwhichyoucanmakeyourselfawareofyourownbias.Ifanopinioncontrarytoyourownmakesyouangry,thatisasignthatyouaresubconsciouslyawareofhavingnogoodreasonforthinkingasyoudo.Ifsomeonemaintainsthattwoandtwoarefive,youfeelpityratherthananger.
Themostsavagecontroversiesarethoseaboutmattersastowhichthereisnogoodevidenceeitherway.Persecutionisusedintheology,notinarithmetic,becauseinarithmeticthereisknowledge,butintheologythereisonlyopinion.Sowheneveryoufindyourselfgettingangryaboutadifferenceofopinion,beonyourguard;youwillprobablyfind,onexamination,thatyourbeliefisgoingbeyondwhattheevidencewarrants.Agoodwayofridingyourselfofcertainkindsofdogmatismistobecomeawareofopinionsheldinsocialcirclesdifferentfromyourown.Seekoutpeoplewithwhomyoudisagree,andreadanewspaperbelongingtoapartythatisnotyours.
Ifthepeopleandthenewspaperseemmadandwicked,remindyourselfthatyouseemsotothemInthisopinionbothpartiesmayberight,buttheycannotbothbewrong.Thisreflectionshouldgeneratecaution.
