Universitystudentsaredifferent.Theycomefromdifferentpartsofthecountry,speakvariousdialects,andfollowtheirdistinctiveregionalcustoms.However,acloserlookattheirpurposesoflearningatuniversitywillenableustoclassifythemroughlyintothreegroups:thosewholearnoutofinstinct,thosewholearnforapromisingfuture,andthosewholearnwithnodefinitepurposes.Firstly,thereareahandfulofstudentswholearnwithoutfatiguesimplybecausetheyliketolearn.TheyreadagreatdealofBritishandAmericannovelsbecausetheyarekeenlyinterestedinliterature.
Otherssitinfrontofthecomputerscreen,workingononenewprogramafteranotheralldayandallnightbecausetheyhavediscoveredbeautyincomplicatedsignalpatterns,anddreamofbecoming“BillGates”oneday.Secondly,therearejob-orientedwhoworkhardforabettercareer.Itisarguablethatthemajorityofuniversitystudentsfallintothiscategory.Afterenrollinginthehottestspecialtyofthemoment,theythrowthemselvesintobooks,whethertheylikethemornot,soastoabsorbthemostknowledgeandtoobtainalltheavailablecertificates,whichmayserveasacompetitiveedgeinthecut-throathumanresourcesmarketinfouryears’time.
Thirdly,thereisasmallfractionofstudentswholearnwithoutanaim.Theytakecourses,finishassignments,enjoylifeoncampus,butleadadirectionlesslife.Theydonotknowwhattheyaredoing,norwhattheyarewillingtodo,norwhattheywillbedoingaftercollege.Theyareagroupof“sleepers”.Studentsfromallpartsofthecountrygatherinthesameuniversity.Afterfouryears,theyparttocontinuetheirvariouslives.However,itisalmostcertainthatthosewholearnoutofinstinctwillbehappy,thosewholearnwithadeterminationwillbeprofessionallysuccessfulatleast,andthosewholearnwithoutanaimwillendupwithnothing.
