Itissuchcolleges,thrivingbutthreatened,Iworryabout.Lowenrollmentisnottheirchiefproblem.Evenwithfullenrollments,theymaygounder.Effortstosavethem,andpreferablytokeepthemprivate,areanationalnecessity.Thereisnobasisforarguingthatprivateschoolsareinherently(固有地)betterthanpublicschools.Examplestothecontraryabound.Anyonecannamestateuniversitiesandcollegesthatrankasthefinestinthenationandtheworld.Itisnowinevitablethatpublicinstitutionswillbedominant,andthereforediversityisanationalnecessity.Diversityinthewaywesupportschoolstendstogiveusahealthydiversityintheformsofeducation.Inanimperfectsocietysuchasours,uniformityofeducationthroughoutthenationcouldbedangerous.Inanimperfectsociety,diversityisapositivegood.Enthusiasticsupportersofpublichighereducationknowtheimportanceofsustainingprivatehighereducation.
