Butsomeoftheguestshavenotyetleft.Theyarestillprolongingthenight:dancing,singing,gossiping,andpostponingtheunfortunatenecessityofundertakingaday’sworkinthefieldsafterasleeplessnight.
Theeveningpartywastostartatteno’clock,butmanyoftheguestsarrivedearlier.Afewofthenearermalerelativeswerelookingratherawkwardineveningsuitswithsmartbowties,andthepleasant,unsophisticatedcountrywomen
appearedalittleself-consciousintheirSundaybest.Twomensqueezingaccordionsprovidedthemusic:theoldIrishtunesthathavebeenplayedatweddingsformanyyears.
Halfthepeopleintheroomweredancingthesquaredanceswhichhavebeenenjoyedevenlonger.Ascoreofmenstoodinthenarrowdarkhallleaningagainstthewall,drinkingbeerfrombottlesandspeculatingaboutcrops,cattleandthecurrentpoliticalsituation.Andwheneverthedancingstopped,somebodywouldstartsingingoneofthesentimental,treasuredIrishsongs:theexilelongingforhishome,thegrief-strickenlovermourninghisfate.Sometimeswealljoinedinthechorus,sadlyandsolemnly,beforegettinguptodanceagain.
Irishweddingsarealmostcertaintohavebeencelebratedinthiswayforgenerations.Ihavebeentoweddingreceptions
wherechampagnehasbeenservedtotheaccompanimentofsoftunnoticedorchestralmusic;IhavelistenedtocarefullypreparedspeechesandeyedalittleenviouslythemodelgownsofwomenfarmoreelegantthanIcouldeverhopetobe.
