Lesson 8. Comparision and Contrast思维导图模板大纲
Comparision/Contrast
Always used in
1. The comparison thought pattern is used to emphasize or discuss similarities.
It between or among theories, concepts, event, whereas the contrast pattern emphasizes differences.
2.This pattern is widely used in the social sciences, where different groups, societies, cultures, or behaviors are studied.
3. A contrast is shown in the following paragraph, which contrasts primary and secondary research in public relations.
Effects
In this pattern, the writer's main idea is a general statement about two things and how they are similar and/or different.
A comparision can include both similarities and differences, or only the similarities.
A contrast states only differences.
Clues
1. Key words/phrases in the main idea: similarities, differences, both, in common, same, different, compare, comparision.
2. Signal words/phrases for similarities: similary, also, in the same way, as, like, both, in common.
3. Signal words/phrases for differences: however, but, on the other hand, although, while, in contrast, than, conversely, yet, unlike.
Structure in Comparision and Contrast
Two ways
1.The point by point techique
For each characteristic, the writer directly compares or contrasts A and B.(A and B are opposite.)
Then, the writer moves on to the next haracteristic and compares or contrasts A and B again.
A point by point passage, then, uses an AB,AB,AB structure.
2.The Block Techique
Why called 'the block techique'
1. Discusses all the characterists of A
2. Discusses all the characterists of B
We get a block of text about one item that's being compared and then get a block of text about the other item.
Comparing and Contrasting Matching items
Although there two opposite topic comparision and contrast passages use two different organizational techniques, they do have one very important thing in common.
In both cases, the characteristics are comparable.
When the writer makes a point about A, she also makes a point about the same characteristic in B.
The writer will talk about the same issues for both.
Comparative Stucture
Words and phrases are used for writing comparisons.
