In1801thefamilymovedtoBath,whereshewasveryunhappy.Tomakemattersworse,in1805herfatherdied,leavinghiswidow,JaneandheronlysisterCassandra,alsounmarried,evenpoorerthanbefore.Forfouryearstheyhadtomovefromhousetohouse,oftenstayingwithrelatives.Finallyin1809herbrotherEdwardallowedthemtoliveinahouseonhisestateinChawton,onlyafewmilesfromSteventonwhereshehadgrownup.Hereshewasmuchhappier,despitebeingthepoorrelation,dependentoncharity.Shenotonlyrevisedherearliernovelbutwasabletowritenewones,usingherexperiencestosatirizeandmakefunofthesocialinequalitiesshesawaroundher.Atlastin1811,SenseandSensibilitywasthefirstofhernovelstobepublished.
