(4)IntheUnitedStatesbusinessmenareskilledathandlingstrongdisagreementinmeetings.TheJapanese,ontheotherhand,areadroitatavoidingsuchconfrontations.这两个句子形成了可以推测同义词的上下文。areskilledat与areadroitat和disagreement与confrontations分别互相对应,adroit与skilled同义,confrontations指的就是disagreement.skilled与disagreement均为读者所熟悉的词,所以必然可以推知adroit与confrontations的词义。
(5)UnliketheUnitedStateswheremanydifferentnationalitiesmakeupthepopulation,Japan'spopulationisquitehomogeneous.上下文提供了推测反义词的条件。与美国在人口组成方面不同,由此可见homogeneous与manydifferentnationalities意义相反,也即ofthesamenationality,同一民族的。词类的功能(如but表示转折,or可引出同义词等)和标点符号(如引号""可表示假意,破折号——可引出同义词或同位语等)也有助于推测词义。
